10 Braves chosen for All-Region Team

(Franklin) — Following up on the first region title in 30 years and a trip to the GHSA Elite-8, a record 11 Heard High School varsity baseball players were named by the region coaches as members of the 2015 All-Region 5-AA baseball team.

Leading the way was outfielder and pitcher Lee Kay who received the highest honor in the region.

Kay was chosen as the 2015 Region Player of the Year after another excellent season following his successful freshman campaign in 2014.

11295772_10204508220846712_839713097740151035_nKay finished the season strong at the plate once again with three home runs, 10 doubles, 35 RBI’s, 35 runs scored, 11 stolen bases a more than healthy .453 batting average while striking out only eight times.

The sophomore was also a team leader on the mound with a 5-2 record over 11 starts with 57 strikeouts an ERA of 2.51. Kay pitched some of his baseball down the stretch.

Also named to the first team all region squad were outfielders Quay Daniel and Ethan Brant, infielders Chandler Polk and Dakota Christopher, and starting pitcher Keagan Spradlin.

Daniel batted .321 with a homer, 27 runs scored, 11 RBI’s, and 12 steals while playing stellar defense in center field. Brant, another sophomore, batted .351 with a homer, 12 RBI’s and 25 runs scored.

Senior Dakota Christopher finished off a fine Heard County career finishing the season with a .378 average, one home run, eight doubles, 32 runs scored, and 21 RBI’s. Christopher also stole 14 bases without once being thrown out.

Spradlin was a key workhorse pitcher for head Coach Trent Bianco tossing 44 innings over 10 starts with an impressive 6-2 record and an ERA of 3.02 and 41 strikeouts.

Chandler Polk landed on the all-region team at two positions including first team infield and second team pitcher. Offensively, Polk batted .393 with a team leading four home runs, 32 RBI’s, 14 steals, and 29 runs. On the mound Polk had two saves and 16 strikeouts over 11 innings pitched in relief.

Other Braves selected by the coaches as part of the second team included outfielder Drew Blair, senior first baseman Zack Stephens, catcher Tristan Brown, and pitcher Carl Lipford.

Lipford had an outstanding ERA of 2.19 on the year with 22 strikeouts over 22.1 innings pitched.

Brown was once again strong at the plate in 2015, batting .333 with 28 RBI’s and team highs in runs scored with 39 and steals with 15. Stephens batted .349 with 22 RBI’s, 27 runs, and 10 steals.

Zack Hill was chosen as an honorable mention. The Braves continue to work hard this summer building towards next season and will return all but two seniors, Stephens and Christopher.
