On October 3rd, Heard County Chamber of Commerce held the Kickoff Reception for their 2011-2012 Youth Leadership Heard class.

Victoria Adams, Hannah Bledsoe, Orlando Burgos, Chris Davila, Gracie Rowe, Morgan Thompson, Sierra White, Hannah Wiggins, and Taylor Wiggins will be participating in the five-month leadership program where they will learn about the needs and issues of our county and state, develop leadership skills, and learn to work together as a team in order that they may resolve some of these needs.

The Youth Leadership Heard participants will begin by traveling to Historic Banning Mills where they will participate in a full day of team building activities including GPS treks, low and high ropes scenarios, and zip lining.

The youth will be challenged to think ‘outside of the box’, build communication skills and self-confidence, and learn that they can do more than they ever thought possible by working through their fear of heights.

During the course of The Youth Leadership program, participants are required to attend a Heard Co. Board of Commissioners meeting, a Franklin City Council meeting, and a meeting of the Heard Co. Board of Education.

They will also attend sessions on Understanding Leadership, Managing Conflict, Communicating Effectively, Setting Goals, Decision-Making, and Community Leadership.

Field trips will be taken to Tenaska Georgia Power Plant in Franklin, and Oglethorpe Power Hydro-Electric Plant in Rome where the youth will be given tours of the plants.

The Chamber would like to thank the following sponsors for their help in the support of this program: Tenaska Georgia Partners and Oglethorpe Power Company.

Also a huge thank you goes to our Youth Leadership Committee: Rev. Noel Forrester, Gail Long, Kathy Knowles, and Lisa Dennis.

Heard County Chamber of Commerce is excited about this Youth Leadership Heard class, who will graduate at the Chamber Spring Luncheon in March.

It is the Chamber’s hope that our community will reap the benefits from these relationships as these students ultimately assume leadership positions.
