(Franklin) – Summer football workouts ended last week with the 7th Iron Brave competition and several milestones were set by this year’s squad which heads into the football season with very high expectations coming off back-to-back Region 5-AA Championships.
The annual competition is a combined athletic and weight-lifting event that is the culmination of lots of effort and hard work by both coaches and players during summer work-outs.
Iron Brave events consist of the Bench Press, Squat, Power Clean, the 40-Yard Dash, the 300-Yard Shuttle Run, and the Broad Jump.
The top 10 participants each year are proclaimed the “Iron Braves” and each receives a t-shirt signifying their huge accomplishment. Each athlete scores between one and 30 points for each of the six events.
Stand-out Duranta Dunson took home the highest honors at the Iron Brave competition for the second consecutive year accumulating 164 overall points. Dunson also brought home the “Weight Champ” award by lifting a total of 1030 pounds in the three weight events. The senior becomes only the second Brave to win back-to-back Iron Brave awards and the first Brave to take the Iron Brave and Weight Champ Awards in the same year.
Two more seniors, Zack Stephens and Elijah Toney, tied for second place in the competition with 147 points each. The rest of the top ten included Diamond Delgado (141 pts.) , Austin Barron (137 pts.) , Chandler Polk (136 pts.) , Andrew Cannon (135 pts.) , Pearce Kirk (128 pts.) , Levi Brown (127 pts.) , and Matt Brown (127 points).
The Braves begin regular practices today and will compete in two scrimmage games (August 15 @ Alexander and August 22 versus Greenville at Staples Stadium) before opening the regular season at Mercer University on Saturday, August 30. Coach Barron and the Braves will battle South Georgia powerhouse Fitzgerald in the neutral site game.
