(Franklin, GA) — Summer football workouts culminated last week with the 9th annual ‘Iron Brave’ competition and the competition was once again stiff.

The traditional competition is a combined athletic and weight-lifting event that is the product of the many hours of effort and hard work by both coaches and players during the summer.

Iron Brave events consist of the Bench Press, Squat, Power Clean, the 40-Yard Dash, the 300-Yard Shuttle Run, and the Broad Jump.

The top 10 participants each year are proclaimed the ‘Iron Braves’ and each receives a t-shirt signifying the huge accomplishment. Each athlete scores between one and 30 points for each of the six events.

Stand-out senior wide receiver Austin Miller took home the highest honors at the Iron Brave competition by accumulating 156 overall points. Miller dominated the athletic portion of the challenge claiming first place in all three events.

Miller ran a 4.50 40-yard dash, had a time of 52.3 in the shuttle, and notched a broad jump of 10-feet and one inch.

Senior Dayvin Tory and Ethan Brant battled hard for second place with Troy edging Brant 141-140.

Rounding out the top five were junior Kendaz Goode (137 pts.) and senior Jaden Moreland (136 pts.). Seniors scored well in the 2016 Iron Brave, claiming six of the top ten spots.

The only underclassman to earn top 10 was sophomore Andrew Leak who came in 10th place with 120 points.

Claiming spots six through nine were junior QB Emory Jones (133 pts.), senior John Helton (130 pts.), senior Peyton Ehlers (129 pts.), and senior Mike Holmes (126).

Senior lineman Jay Jones was named the 2016 ‘Weight Champion’ after winning two of the three weightlifting events. Jones had a solid bench press of 375 and a 520-lb. squat.

Peyton Ehlers had the highest power clean at 315 lbs.

In the freshman ‘Iron Brave’ results, first place was taken by Micaiah Austin (102 pts.), second place by Wyn Denney (88 pts.), and third place went to Quay Thornton (85 pts.).

Just missing the top three were Aiden Byrd (83 pts.) and Jake Harrod (81 pts.).

Kendaz Goode made the biggest improvement from 2015 and strength coach Rich Fendley says that Jaden Moreland, Emory Jones, John Helton, Mike Holmes, and Andrew Leak were some of the hardest workers during the off-season.

The Heard County weightlifting program is recognized year in and year out as one of the elite programs in the state in Class AA.

The Braves began regular practices in pads on Monday will compete in two scrimmage games (August 5 @ Lagrange and August 12 versus Chapel Hill at Staples Stadium) before opening the regular season at South Atlanta on Thursday, August 18.
