Alabama Chase Ends in Franklin

Two Randolph County men are in the Heard County, Ga., jail after leading officers on a chase from Roanoke to Franklin, Ga., the day after Christmas.

According to the report from Roanoke Police Department, a call came in to 911 just after midnight that two men in a black truck were on Strozier Street attempting to steal a blue 2004 Suzuki motorcycle.

Officers spotted the truck on Chestnut Street with the motorcycle loaded onto a trailer. The truck fled to U.S. 431 north, then to County Roads 61, 65 and 87, where the motorcycle fell off the trailer and landed in a yard near Omaha.

The chase continued on County Roads 632 and 52 before entering Heard County, Ga. The trailer lost a tire and the chase continued with the truck dragging the trailer. The truck wrecked at the intersection of Highway 34 and U.S. 27 at Franklin.

Along the way, officers with Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Wedowee Police Department, Heard County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin Police Department assisted in the chase.

After the wreck, the passenger, Jeffrey Wayne East, 24, of 6922 County Rd. 65, Roanoke, bailed out and fled on foot. He was tased and taken into custody by Randolph County deputies.

East was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and Xanax pills. Eric Wayne Bonner, the driver, age 20, of 5150 County Rd. 82, Wedowee, remained in the truck and was also taken into custody.

East is charged in Georgia with three counts of possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of an officer. Bonner is charged with two counts of failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving and criminal trespassing.

They remain in the Heard County jail. Extradition papers will be filed so that they can come back to Alabama and face charges of theft for the motorcycle and attempting to elude a police officer.
