Coach Tim Barron, David Robbins, Tyler Wynn, Tori Rogers, Taron Person, Coach Rich Fendley

Countless hours of hard work paid off in a big way for the Braves varsity weightlifting team on Saturday March 3 at the 2012 GACA (Georgia Athletic Coaches Association) State Championships held in Thomasville,GA.

As a team, the Braves scored a very impressive runner-up team finish to the host Bulldogs. The Bulldogs outscored the Braves 82-72 and Cook County placed third with 47.

Points are given based on individual finishes up to sixth place in each weight class. The Braves had 12 competitors to finish sixth or higher and earn points including four lifters who won state championships.

The competition consists of three very different lifts, the bench press, the squat, and the power clean with the pounds being combined for the lifter’s overall score. Seniors David Robbins and Tyler Wynn as well as Sophomores Taron Person and Tori Rogers all captured the first place medals.

Robbins, who won the 226-245 pound class, was impressive as he nailed the highest bench press at 355 and the highest squat at 530 for the entire field of competition in all weight classes. He finished with a total of 1140 pounds.

Tyler Wynn scored exactly 1000 pounds to win the 161-170 pound class. Wynn power cleaned and awesome 315 which was highest for the Braves.

Person, only a sophomore, combined his lifts for a total of 1050 pounds to win 246-unlimited class. Person is expected to be a force on the offensive and defensive lines for the Braves football team next season.

Finally another sophomore, Tori Rogers, took home the first prize medal for the under-140 class with an impressive 890 pound total.

“This was the strongest, best performance I have seen in my 16 years of coaching. Coach Tim Barron’s help has been a real catalyst to our success. He is every bit as knowledgeable as myself in the weight room and it works out great that we can work one-on-one with twice as many kids as most other teams who typically only have one coach.” – Braves Strength Coach Rich Fendley.

For Barron the benefits are two-fold as he prepares his football team for the much-anticipated upcoming season on the gridiron.

Qua Reid and Ta Freeland also did outstanding as both finished in second place. The fourth place winners were Jonathon Hunt, Jace Mock, and Jake Edwards.

Austin Binion brought home fifth place while Dillian Bradley and Dalton Pate rounded out the points at sixth place in their respective weight classes. This was the first year that the state meet has been broken down into classifications like most other sports.
