Below the Yellow Line: Auto Club Previews

This weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series heads into Southern California. Here are my race previews for Auto Club Speedway!

NASCAR Nationwide Series: Royal Purple 300

The NASCAR Nationwide Series race this weekend is sure to be exciting. Practice took place yesterday with #3 Austin Dillon being the fastest followed by last weekend’s runner up #32 Kyle Larson. This race will be exciting because of all the different grooves the track has. We could easily see cars going 4 or 5 wide during today’s race. Some notable driver changes are: Dakota Armstrong making his debut in the #33 RCR Chevrolet, Paulie Harraka in the #79 GoGreen Racing car, Kevin Swindell in the #98, and Landon Cassill in the #4. As far as favorites go, Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas have absolutely owned Auto Club Speedway in the Nationwide Series. I think two drivers to keep an eye on are the #54 Monster Energy Toyota of Kyle Busch and the #20 Dollar General Toyota of Brian Vickers. My pick to win this weekend is the #54 of Kyle Busch. He’s won two of the first four races this season and I look for him to continue his dominance today at Auto Club. Look to see Kyle Busch in victory lane at the end of the day. The race starts at 5:00 ET.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Auto Club 400

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Fontana this weekend after a crazy Bristol race. Many people are wondering whether Joey Logano will exact his revenge against Denny Hamlin from last week. It will be interesting to watch. Qualifying took place yesterday with #11 Denny Hamlin taking the pole. Two cars, #2 Brad Keselowski and #16 Greg Biffle will have to start in the rear of the field following engine changes. This will make it a Joe Gibbs Racing 1-2-3 with #11 Denny Hamlin on pole, followed by #18 Kyle Busch in second and #20 Matt Kenseth in third. My pick to win this weekend is the #11 FedEx Toyota of Denny Hamlin. He dominated this race a year ago until pitting on the closing laps thinking rain would hold off but the race ended because of rain. Good news is that Denny won’t make that same mistake tomorrow because the forecast is sunny and clear! It will be interesting to see all the action from Auto Club Speedway this weekend!
