Blue-chip Brave signs with the University of Florida

(Franklin, GA) — Heard High senior star quarterback Emory Jones announced Wednesday that he would be signing with the Florida Gators to play college football under new head coach Dan Mullen.

The anticipation was high as several of the top programs in the nation awaited his final decision during the first day of the early signing period on Wednesday.

Jones had verbally committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2016 but other top programs continued to call with several of the top coaches in the nation visiting Heard High over the past several weeks including Nick Saban from Alabama.

Others interested in Emory’s services for the next four years included Auburn and Florida State.

Ultimately, the recruiting cycle came full circle as Emory ended up signing with the first coach to ever offer him a D-1 scholarship.

Mullen and new UF quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson were the first coaches to offer Jones a scholarship when they were at Mississippi State — at the time Jones was only a high school freshman.

Soon after that first offer from Mullen, Jones quickly developed into one of the nation’s top-rated dual-threat quarterbacks.

Mullen has only been at the helm of the Gators for a few weeks and the signing of Jones was a huge feather in his recruiting cap that sent the Gator Nation fan base into a frenzy when Emory donned the Gator cap during the ceremony at Sports & Social in Atlanta.

Jones says the response has been strong from Florida fans who can’t wait to see him in uniform next fall.

“The Gator fans, they’re crazy,” Jones told Fox 5 news this week. “They’ve been trying to get me all on social media, my followers went crazy, my (direct messages) have been blowing up, just by Gators fans. I know they’re supportive. I can’t wait to get there.”

Jones believes God led him in the direction of the Gators in a decision that literally came in the final hours before the signing.

“It was just crazy how God put that in front of me for Coach Mullen to come back in my life at this time,” Jones said in an interview with seccountry.com. “He offered me my first scholarship, so it’s crazy for me. And it’s always been a great relationship with [Coach Johnson], since the beginning. When I was committed to Ohio State, he always checked up on me and asked how I was doing. So him coming back into my life, it’s just even better. We have grown so much together and I feel like it’s a great place for me.”

Jones’ top target this season but still uncommitted Jaden Moreland spoke at the ceremony and Brave head coach Tim Barron weighed in on the special talent that Jones will bring to Florida.

“Emory always had the talent. You could see he could throw it and run it. You didn’t know the intangibles but you knew the talent,” Barron said. “He was a sponge for knowledge. We always knew he was a special guy as an athlete. We always knew he threw a pretty ball. But those intangibles that separate a good quarterback from a great quarterback, to see that part of his game develop and mature over the past couple of years — that’s what makes Emory really special.”

With Jones graduating from HHS early and enrolling soon at UF, many college football experts think the impact of Jones will be felt sooner rather than later and that he could even be the starting QB when the Gator season opens at home versus Charleston Southern next September 1.

Jones had several family members, coaches, and other Brave fans on hand for the signing ceremony Wednesday and the his mom Trina Emory will be hosting an additional signing celebration for Emory at Heard County High School Saturday night from 5:00-7:00 PM in the cafeteria.

All of Emory’s Heard County fans and friends are invited to come out and wish him well and take photographs before he leaves for Gainesville.
