Body of missing woman found on West Point Lake

(Troup County, GA) — Officials with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that a body found on West Point Lake has been identified as that of a missing 24-year-old woman.

The body of Maranda Whitten, a recent Auburn graduate, was found Monday around 8:30 AM EST.

According to Sheriff James Woodruff, her kayak was located located Saturday afternoon around 2 PM. She was last seen in her kayak Thursday afternoon.

Officials also confirmed that her body was found with an extension cord, which was missing from the campground, and was tied to her ankles then to a large rock.

This tragedy is being treated as a suicide, according to the TCSO press release, and her body is being sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy as part of standard procedure.
