Brave Nation Weekly News & Notes (08/15/18)

(Franklin) — Each week during the sports season, HeardCitizen.com brings you a weekly wrap-up of Brave Nation sports including news, notes, a weekly schedule, and the Brave Nation Player of the Week.

NEWS AND NOTES

Softball Players Recognized — Anna Shelnutt and Cali Harrod’s NCAA National Championship accomplishment was recognized last Friday with the unveiling of a plaque above the concessions stand at the Lady Brave softball field. The two girls were in attendance and spoke briefly at the Hall of Fame ceremony as well.

Hall of Fame Ceremony (Video) — The Heard County Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place Friday afternoon in the school cafeteria at HCHS. To see video from the event click here.

Opening Night Football — The Braves will open the regular season versus the Class AAAA Lagrange Grangers at Callaway Stadium Lagrange this Friday night at 7:30 PM. HeardCitizen.com will have a game preview including directions posted Thursday. The Braves have never beaten the Grangers losing the only two match-ups between the programs in 2008 and 2009.

Brave Nation Player of the Week

The Brave Nation Player of the Week is sophomore HCHS golfer Shelby Oldham.

As only a freshman last spring, Shelby completed one of the strongest finishes in program history and was recognized as the Lady Brave golf team MVP for the season.

She has been working hard all summer to improve her game at various camps and tournaments.

Congratulations to Shelby for being named this week’s Brave Nation Player of the Week. 

HCMS Football Opener — The HCMS Braves football team opens the season versus Callaway (5:00 PM) next Tuesday, August 21 at HCMS. The middle school football jamboree will take place Saturday, August 25 at Staples Stadium. The event will feature teams from Heard, Central, Carollton and Handley and takes place from 10 AM-2 PM.

State Rankings — The Brave football team is ranked No. 2 in Class AA in the preseason AJC Poll released on Sunday. The Braves will host No. 1 ranked defending State Champion Hapeville Charter on Friday, August 31 at Staples Stadium in a rematch of last year’s Class AA semi-finals. The Georgia Sportswriter’s Association ranks the Braves at No. 3 with Hapeville No. 1 and Rabun County No. 2.

HCMS Softball Opener — The HCMS softball team will travel to Bowdon to open the season on Tuesday, August 28 and return home to face Villa Rica in the home opener on August 30.
