Brave pitchers allow no hits in sweep over Cherokees

Senior Pitcher Ben Cole

Senior Ben Cole pitched a no-hitter in game one of Friday night’s double-header with Kendrick to lead the Braves to a sweep and a 3-0 region 5-AA record.

Cole allowed only a walk in six innings pitched and struck out nine batters in the 10-0 game one victory. “I had always hoped to pitch a no-hitter but it’s not something you really think that much about while you are on the mound. I am very happy,” said Cole after the game.

The Braves dominated the Cherokees in the two games with both wins coming by the mercy rule.

Ryan Hutchins actually allowed no hits in game two either but the game was called after only four innings as the Braves went up 15-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Ryan Thornhill was the offensive hero with walk-off game ending hits in both games. Catcher Noah Shelnutt continued his hot hitting going 4-6 on the day and is batting .452 on the season.

Dalton Reed has also been on fire batting .562 on the season. Taylor Smith has been the big run producer with 10 RBI’s on the year.

The Braves currently lead the region at 3-0 (5-4 overall) but Jordan, Temple, and Callaway are also undefeated. A very experienced Callaway squad appears to be the front-runner for the Region Championship although a lot of baseball is still to be played.

The Braves dropped Thursday’s game to Central 8-3 in what was a closer game than the score would indicate and they defeated Carver 18-2 in Columbus on Tuesday.

The Braves will return to action on Monday when they host the Handley Tigers at home (5:30).
