Brave Raines on Blue Devil Parade to Capture Championship

[gpslideshow]

A large crowd was on hand at the Heard County Middle School today, despite the cool and windy conditions, to witness a very exciting championship softball game between the Lady Braves and the Bremen Blue Devils.

In the end, the Lady Braves brought home the 2011 Small School Division Championship with a 5-4 victory in a game that featured two outstanding defensive plays by Alexis Raines at second base. In addition to the two big catches, Alexis also had a hit, scored the game tying run, and was named the Player of the Game.

The first two innings of the game were controlled by the pitchers Jordan Watson for the Braves and Ally Hindman for the Devils, and as the game headed to the bottom half of the third it was scoreless.

In the third inning, the entire HCMS football team showed up after practice to support their classmates and fortunes began to change. After a double by Jordan Watson scored Alyssa Cosper, Hannah Stevens singled to bring Jordan home and then a throwing error by Bremen allowed Hannah to also come all the way home and put the Braves up 3-0 after three innings of play.

The Blue Devils then came back with a single run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom half of the fifth.

Anna Shelnutt led off the inning with a long fly ball that was not handled by the center fielder and she advanced to second base. In the most controversial play of the day, Shelnutt was called out at third base on the next hit by Alexis Raines.

After a conference by the umpires, the original safe call by the base umpire was reversed which brought a livid Coach Kathy Scott out of the dug-out to argue to no avail with the home plate umpire. Jordan Watson then stepped up to the plate and delivered a huge triple which scored Raines from second base to tie the game at 4-4 and drive the Braves fans into hysteria.

Hannah Stephens then stepped to the plate and grounded out, but in the process Watson brought home the go ahead run, and as the game headed to the Devils final at bat the Lady Braves held a slim 5-4 lead. With one out in the sixth,  Raines made her second fabulous defensive play as she dove into the outfield on a great catch for the out.

On the very next pitch the Devils hitter lined out to first baseman Hannah Stephens and the celebration was on as Coach Kathy Scott and her girls hoisted their third consecutive small school championship trophy.

The win finished off an amazing season in which the girls only lost one game and only lost by a single run. Pitcher Jordan Watson’s excellent pitching combined with excellent hitting by Anna Shelnutt, Alyssa Cosper, Hannah Stephens, and Raines led the way all season long. After the game an obviously emotional Coach Scott said she was extremely proud of the girls effort all season and that she would miss all of her eighth graders tremendously next year. Congrats to the HCMS Lady Braves softball team on the huge win!
