(Franklin) — The Brave tennis teams both moved past round one of the GHSA Class AA State Tennis playoffs this week at HHS.

On Tuesday afternoon the boys defeated Washington-Wilkes High School, the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AA 5-0.

Winning matches were all three singles players junior No. 1 Trey Wiggins, senior No. 2 Lane Nelms, and senior No.3 Brian Hill.

In doubles action, freshman Garrett Callahan and Michael Cadwell got a big win as did the junior combination of Hunter Clark and John Helton.

The Braves will travel to Thomasville (tentatively scheduled for Monday) to take on the Bulldogs in the Sweet 16 round.

A win would mean a male Heard County tennis squad has reached the Elite-8 in the state playoffs for the first time in school history.

In girl’s play, the Lady Braves became the first female team in HHS history to win any state playoff match as they defeated the visiting Redskins of Social Circle 3-2.

Melissa Collins and Makayla Red scored big singles wins while the tandem duo of Taylor Storey and senior Anna Sims got the decisive third win.

The Lady Braves have a short time to celebrate as they now head to Berrien this afternoon for a Sweet 16 match-up with the Rebels.

Berrien is the No. 1 seed from Region 1-AA.

The Braves tennis teams are coached by Rich Fendley.
