Brave Wrestling Claims 6th Place at CRWA Meet

(Carrollton, GA) — The Braves varsity and junior varsity wrestling squads traveled to Carrollton Friday and Saturday to compete at the big Chattahoochee River Wrestling Association Meet at Central High School and pulled out a strong sixth place finish out of 14 teams.

The Braves finished just half of a point behind the host team Central. Alexander took the overall title with 262.5 points followed by second place Troup (200.5), third place Northgate (152.5) and fourth place Lagrange (136).

Several wrestlers had big meets for Coach Kyle Yates including seniors Devin Caito and Andrew Cannon who each brought home second place medals.

Caito, a second year wrestler, competed in the 113 pound class and knocked off wrestlers from Central, Haralson County, and Troup before falling to Justin Kiss from Callaway in the finals.

Cannon took down opponents from Harris County and Alexander before dropping the final match to Guy Weglenka of Lagrange in the 195 pound bracket.

Two more senior grapplers, Matt Brown and Jacob Bishop scored third place medals at the meet.

Brown dropped a semi-final match to eventual champion Leo Alysworth from Alexander in the 220 pound bracket before winning his final two matches for the third place finish.

Bishop also lost to an Alexander Cougar in the semifinals before battling back for the third place medal with wins over Troup and Northgate in the heavyweight bracket.

Freshman Gage Cannon took home fourth place in the 145 pound class, Kinley Cantrell scored a fifth place finish in the 170 pound bracket, and Kevin Hendrix won sixth place at 120.

The Braves junior varsity squad also did well at the meet with four wrestlers finishing in the top four. Leading the way for the junior varsity Braves was first place winner Eli Fairbanks.

Luis Vasquez finished with a second place medal. Michael Cheney and Sam Brown each nabbed fourth place.

The Braves will be back at Central Tuesday night to take on the Lions before traveling north next weekend for the Pepperell Invitational.
