Braves advance to Sweet 16

(Social Circle,GA) — The Braves battled back from a painful loss in game one of a doubleheader Friday to knock off the Social Circle Redskins in round one of the GHSA Class AA playoffs.

After dropping game one 8-7 on a walk-off base hit, coach Trent Bianco’s squad persevered and won the nightcap of the twin bill 10-3 and Saturday afternoon’s rubber game 8-4.

Austin Wilson was the star of the game Saturday pitching 5.1 innings in relief of starter Trey Alford to earn the win. Wilson allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter while fanning two.

Lee Kay, Tristan Brown, and Logan Ward provided the bulk of the offense. Kay led the way with four hits and four RBI’s including a double and a triple. Brown and Ward each scored twice and had two base hits. Drew Blair drove in a run with a base hit.

“Austin Wilson was our MVP today,” said Bianco late Saturday. “I am so proud of our boys, they showed a lot of heart in this series.”

The Braves had to regroup quickly in game two Friday after the devastating loss in a game one where they led the Redskins 7-5 before the final half inning.

In game two the Braves scored four as the home team in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Kay, Alford, Ethan Brant, and Chandler Polk all had multiple hit games at the plate. Polk had four RBI’s while Alford and Brant each drove in a pair of runs.

Senior Keagan Spradlin had another nice outing picking up the complete game win while allowing just one earned and striking out four. Spradlin found the strike zone on 68 of his 99 pitches.

Alford and Spradlin each had two hits in the game one loss. Senior Quay Daniel tripled and Brant doubled as the team had nine hits in the game. Brant and Spradlin each drove home two runs.

The Braves will take on Lamar County in round two this week in Barnesville. The Trojans earned their Sweet 16 appearance by sweeping Fitzgerald Friday.

The matchup with the Trojans is especially interesting since the two teams will be region foes next season after reclassification takes hold. The series will begin with a doubleheader Wednesday at 4:00 and a possible “if” game on Thursday at 5:30. All the three games will be played at Lamar Co. High School. The Trojans are the top seed from Region 4-AA.

The winner of this week’s series will face either Holy Innocence or Harlem in the quarterfinals. Holy Innocence (No. 4 seed Region 6-AA upset the No. 1 seed Gordon Lee from Region 7-AA. If they knock off Harlem, the Braves could potentially host the quarterfinals series at Alford Field in Franklin.

In other Region 5-AA vs. Region 8-AA round one results, Bowdon swept Oglethorpe County and Bremen swept Rabun County. Manchester was swept at Union County. Bremen will travel to Berrien in round two while Bowdon hosts Thomasville.
