Braves aim to stave off elimination versus Trojans

(Franklin, GA) — Following this weekend’s action, the Heard County Braves have learned they will meet the Lamar County Trojans on Tuesday at 5:30 PM in round one of the Region 5-AA Tournament at Bremen High School.

The Braves and Trojans each lost contests versus region top seeded Spencer Greenwave Friday night to set up the No. 4 versus No. 5 match-up.

The game will be heavy on postseason implications with the winner earning a chance to play in the first round of the GHSA Class AA State Playoff and the loser being eliminated from the postseason all together. The teams have already met twice with each team winning on their home floor.

The neutral site tourney affair could be a close one and the winner will go on to meet the aforementioned Greenwave in the late game Thursday night at Lamar County where the semifinals and championships for both boys and girls will be played out.

The championship and third place games will be at Lamar on Saturday.

Friday night’s second clash with the Spencer in Franklin played out very similarly to the first pre-holiday meeting in Columbus on December 14.

The Braves again put together a strong first half and were tied with the Greenwave 24-24 before the visitors went on a 21-2 run to open the second half before ultimately falling 71-42.

Head coach Keith Simmons hopes his squad maintains its confidence and learns from the regular season battles heading into the lose-or-go-home situation they are facing Tuesday in Bremen

“We’ve got learn how to play through some non calls. We played hard in the first half (Friday night), but I think we didn’t take enough advantage of the first half opportunities — but a very gritty effort considering we had two games in three nights.”

Even down big late to the Greenwave, Simmons stressed to his guys to keep fighting.

“I told them regardless of how it goes in the fourth quarter you’ve got to show them there is no give up — you do not wan to give them an edge going in to next week. But hats off, Spencer is a deep team and undefeated in the region for a reason, says Simmons.

“I think we should take it as we had them on the ropes around halftime in both games so we should see that we are not that far away from them.”

Despite drawing a lot of defenders, Senior Alijah Huzzie led the way with 19 points in Friday’s loss. Senior Tray Dunson and sophomore Ayden Cannon each scored six points and freshman Isaiah O’Neal saw some late action scoring three.

The Lady Braves will take on Temple in the girls 4/5 game Tuesday at 4:00 PM in Bremen just prior to the Braves match-up versus Lamar County at 5:30 PM.

The Braves defeated Temple 54-47 on senior night Wednesday at home. Huzzie had 19 points with senior Will Hammett and freshman Jameer Cook each scoring nine and Cannon adding six.
