Braves basketball celebrates Senior Night with sweep

2020-2021 Heard County High School Basketball Seniors

(Franklin, GA) — Heard County High School honored its senior players, managers, cheerleaders, and sports medicine team members Tuesday night as both the boys and girls teams hosted Northgate in Franklin.

The Braves capped off the night with an impressive 67-60 come-from-behind win over the Vikings after trailing the Class AAAAA team by 11 points (32-21) at the half.

Leading the charge in the comeback was junior Isaiah O’Neal who scored a career-high 22 points including 20 in the second half and 12 in the fourth quarter.

Senior Ayden Cannon also had a huge night scoring 17 to improve the Braves’ season record to 3-2 heading into this weekend’s SMI Christmas Tournament in Carroll County.

Other leading scorers in the win were D.J. Herring, Ty Smith, and Jameer Cook who each scored six along with senior Ethan Lawson who tallied five.

The Braves will travel to Bowdon Friday night at 7:30 PM to take on the Red Devils at the SMI tourney.

In girls’ action, the Lady Braves continued their winning ways with a dominant 72-30 win over the Lady Vikings. The win moves the Lady Braves’ record to 8-1 on the season.

All three Lady Braves seniors had nice efforts in the win with Sophia Long scoring 13 including going 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Long also had seven assists and six steals.

Hermonie Garza scored eight and Briana Labaff had five. Freshman Jayden Boykin again led the squad with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Junior Zekylah Boyd had a big night with 11 points and five rebounds and Jasmine Owens scored nine and hauled in six rebounds.

The Lady Braves will travel to Heritage-Newnan Friday at 6:00 PM for another non-region game. Varsity and JV girls home games scheduled for Saturday vs. East Coweta have been cancelled.
