Braves close out regular season on high notes

(Barnesville, GA) — The Braves varsity basketball squads traveled to Lamar County Friday night to close out the regular season slate and both grabbed big wins.

Although the games played no part in either team’s region playoff seedings, the wins went a long way in building momentum for next week’s huge Region Championship tournament.

Coach Keith Simmons and the boys team dominated the Trojans by a final of score of 56-27.

As it has been all season long, the Braves’ suffocating defense keyed the win. The Braves held the Trojans to just 11 first half points while scoring 32 on the offensive end.

Coach Simmons was able to get a lot of quality minutes from his bench while resting many of his starters during the second half.

The leading scorer on the night was Emory Jones with 16 points. Other top scorers included Alijah Huzzie (8), Jordarius Foster (7), and Torrance Allen (6).

The Braves remained No. 10 in this week’s state rankings and closed the season with a 10 game undefeated streak while going undefeated in region play for the first time in modern history.

The Braves will host a semi-final game on Thursday at 8:30 PM at HHS. The semi-final winners will meet Friday night at HHS for the Region title game also tipping at 8:30 PM.

In girl’s action, Coach Helen Akins and the Lady Braves played well in their 55-39 win over the Lady Trojans.

The top scorers on the night were Kimberly Harris with 17, Hannah Sanders with 14, and Haley Bennett with eight.

The Lady Braves will also host a semi-final game on Thursday at 7:00 PM and with a win would host Friday night’s championship game also at 7:00 PM.

The girls will be aiming for back-to-back Region trophies after upsetting Manchester for the title on the road last season.
