Braves come back to edge Knights, Ladies cruise

Elite Feature(Morrow, GA) — The Braves varsity basketball squad got an exciting comeback win on the road Thursday night, knocking off the Elite Scholars Academy Royal Knights 58-57 after trailing by eight points with just four minutes to play in the game.

The Braves battled back several times during the game including overcoming an early 10 point deficit in the first quarter to take a 27-26 lead at the half.

The third quarter belonged to the Knights, however as they outscored Coach Fitz-Simons’ squad 19-11 to take the eight point advantage heading to the final quarter.

Christian Murray had a huge night for the Braves with 18 points. Murray was especially big late in the game at the line with 14 made free throws including 6-for-6 over the last four minutes.

Kendaz Goode was second in scoring with eight points. Young players Alijah Huzzie and D.J. Emory each had five points apiece in the second half to contribute to the big comeback.

“It was just a total team effort and win tonight — we had 11 of our 14 kids score points,” said Fitz-Simons after the game.

“It was a fun place to be in tonight and I couldn’t be happier for these kids winning a game on the road an hour and a half from home on a Thursday night. I don’t expect a lot of blowouts this season — I think we will be in a lot of dogfights.”

In the girls game, the Lady Braves knocked off the Lady Knights for the second time this season, this time around by a final score of 47-22.

Senior Madison Whitehead led the Lady Braves in scoring with 16 and senior Jordan Watson was not far behind with 14.

Whitehead hopes the Lady Braves have a big season for her senior year. “I feel like we can win region if we just have to stay behind each other and play as a team,” said Whitehead Thursday night.

“Coach Akins is a hard-working coach, and she takes basketball really serious. I believe she can lead us to that title.”

The Braves and Lady Braves return to the court next Tuesday night to face off against Central-Carrollton (6:00/7:30) at HHS.
