Braves crush Tigers in Region 5-AA Opener

(Franklin, GA) — After much anticipation this week, legendary Atlanta broadcaster Bill Hartman and High 5 Sports discovered an electric atmosphere as they descended on the Heard County community Friday night for the Fox 5 Game of the Week at Staples Stadium featuring the Heard County Braves versus the Temple Tigers in a Region 5-AA opener.

The Braves (5-1) did not disappoint Fox 5 or the packed house in attendance at Staples as they dominated the Tigers (4-1) by a final score of 41-0.

Several Braves had big nights including junior Ohio State commit Emory Jones who passed for over 300 yards in the rout. Jones completed 15 of his 20 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior DayVin Troy made the most of his eight carries by finding the endzone three times.

Despite the big nights from both Jones and Troy, it was junior receiver Jaden Moreland that stole the show with one of the best performances in school history that earned him Fox 5 Player of the Game honors and a post-game TV interview with Bill Hartman.

Moreland seemed to make a highlight reel effort almost every time he touched the ball. He caught six passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Austin Miller also caught two passes for 75 yards including a 66-yard bomb from Jones to ignite the Braves on their first offensive drive.

The Braves dominated the Tigers in total yardage 425 to 216. After giving up a big pass play on the first Tiger drive of the game, the Brave defense settled down to pitch the shutout the rest of the way.

“I thought our defensive coaches D.J. Curbow, Shane Lassetter, and Rich Fendley just did a great job getting us ready for all those different formations they ran,” said Coach Tim Barron after the game.

Nine different Brave players caught passes in the game as Coach Tim Barron was able to make several substitutions in the second half.

Even when the Tiger defense managed to slow down the Braves potent offensive attack in the second quarter, senior punter Trey Wiggins would pin the Tigers inside their own 1-yard line with a perfect punt. It just seemed to be the Braves’ night in all aspects of the game.

Barron was excited about the performance of his junior receiver Moreland. “Jaden looked so good tonight — that one catch he made he just went up and said — ‘I am better than you and ain’t nothing you can do about it.'”

The Braves will now have an unusual two weeks off before returning to action in a Region 5-AA showdown with Callaway in Lagrange on Thursday, October 13.

Our Braves are AWESOME ! Congrats to each player. Also a big SHOUT OUT to our CHEERLEADERS who show that they love their Braves and also love what they do best —— CHEERING ! ! !

  2. Congratulations on the solid win. All that hard work from the summer is starting to pay off. Don’t get complacent and keep hitting it hard! Don’t let that intensity drop off and use these two off weeks to challenge each other to get better.
