Braves dominate Indians 47-12

Braves offensive coordinator Randall Curbow has to be pleased with the performance of his offense during the first two games this year.

After dominating the Chattooga Indians 47-12 Friday night, the Braves are now 2-0 and averaging 45 points per game on the young season.

Leading the way for the Braves once again this week was sophomore running back Duranta Dunson.

Dunson gained 137 yards on the ground while scoring two touchdowns and also added a third 85-yard touchdown on his second kickoff return to pay dirt this season.

He also added another very long kick return for a total of 157 yards on special teams. Defensively Dunson added a drive stopping interception and five tackles.

Junior Tori Rogers also shined scoring two rushing touchdowns and gaining 82 yards.

Impressively leading the offense once again was Jonathon Hunt who completed 3 of his five passes for 128 yards and one touchdown to Senior Damon Pearson.

Team Captains Corey Freeman (#66), Zane Woods (#87), Duranta Dunson (#5), and Jonathon Hunt (#4)

Pearson had two grabs on the evening for 49 yards.

Taylor Smith and Ta Freelend also had catches for big gains. Hunt also carried the ball five times for 58 yards and a touchdown.

The big men up front continued to provide big holes and good protection for Hunt.

Senior Corey Freeman and the Junior trio of Jake Edwards, Taron Person, and Jace Mock continued to play very well. Senior Dalton Pate missed the game with injury but is expected to return quickly.

Filling in for Pate were Dylan Yates and Hank Barnes. Defensively, Ta Freeland was a standout with eight tackles, and Cody Stephens also added seven take downs including two for losses. Hunt, Dillian Bradley, and Christopher Pease each added five stops.

The Indians stunned the Braves early scoring on the first drive of the game but a blocked PAT by senior Bradley set the pace and the Braves responded with 40 unanswered points.

The Indians added a late touchdown to finish out the scoring. Freshman kicker Collin Nutt showed tremendous improvement nailing his first three PAT attempts. Team captains for the game were Freeman, Hunt, Dunson, and Zane Woods.

The Braves will be off this week giving them two weeks to prepare for perhaps the biggest game of the season when they host their first Region 5-AA contest with the Bremen Blue Devils on September 21 at Staples Stadium.
