Braves drop game one to Cavs

(Lagrange, GA) — The Callaway Cavaliers held serve on their home field Tuesday knocking off the Heard County Braves 9-2 in the first of a three game series to determine the Region 5-AA baseball champions.

Now the focus turns to Alford Field this Friday where the teams will meet again in a doubleheader with the Braves now looking to earn the title with a sweep of games two and three.

Starting pitcher Tray Owens allowed seven runs through the first three innings but only three were earned as four third inning defensive miscues helped the Cavs take an 8-0 lead heading to the fourth.

Senior A.J. Head pitched well in relief to close out the game tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out two.

Chandler Lott was very effective for the Cavs going six innings while allowing just three hits and striking out seven to earn the game one win.

Run scoring singles by Caden Raines and Leroy Marsh got the Braves on the board in the top of the seventh.

Raines and shortstop Dale Thornhill each had two hits with Bryan Jones adding a double.

Coach Trent Bianco says his team will be back to work tomorrow knowing the series is a long way from being over.

“We’re not going back and reinvent the wheel at practice or anything — it just goes back to confidence,” said Bianco following the game. “If we play like we have the last three weeks we are fine and knowing the guys in our dugout I expect everyone to work their tails off the next two days and come back ready to compete on Friday.”

Friday’s huge doubleheader at Alford Field will begin with a game one first pitch at 4:30 PM in Franklin.

With a sweep of the twin bill, the Braves would capture the Region 5-AA crown and a No. 1 seed in the GHSA Class AA State Playoffs. With at least a split, the Cavs would secure both the title and the top seed.

The top four teams from Region 5-AA will do battle with the top four from 6-AA in round one beginning on April 26.

The Braves still have non-region contests to play next week versus Handley, Central, and Bremen to close out the regular season.
