Braves earn No. 3 seed for Area Duals

(Franklin) — Head Coach Kyle Yates and the Heard County wrestling team scored a couple of team victories Wednesday night in Franklin with the most important being a close 39-36 triumph over the Bowdon.

That close victory over the Red Devils scored Yates’ squad the No. 3 seed at this weekend’s upcoming Area 2 team duals at Lamar County High School in Barnesville.

Seeding is crucial at the precursor for next weekend’s state duals because only the top two teams from each area will advance to Macon next weekend.

The Braves have never advance to state in the team duals since the format was introduced in 2002, so a top two finish would be an excellent step for the program as a whole.

Making the state duals at the Macon Centreplex has been a goal of the team all season long.

“I couldn’t ask for better kids than we have on this squad,” said Coach Yates Tuesday night after the matches. “Blake McAdams at 138 had a huge match for us. He didn’t get pinned which was huge for us. Gage Cannon’s pin was the one that sealed the deal for us. Very proud of how all of our guys competed with Bowdon tonight.”

Not getting pinned is very important at a dual competition because a pin results in six points for the other team while a regular loss only results in three points. It is also very important to fill as many of the 14 weight classes as possible, meaning a strong program with lots of kids coming out to wrestle is key.

“We are really hoping to finish top two and make those state duals. That’s what I have told the guys since the beginning of the season,” Yates said. “Bremen’s always going to be tough to beat, but we can get that No. 2 spot if we do what we’re supposed to do.”

Bremen has qualified for the state duals every year since 2002.

Some of the Brave grapplers who wrestled key matches in the win over Bowdon were Cody Yates, Eli Fairbanks, Sam Brown, Matt Brown, and Gage Cannon.

Senior Devin Caito scored six points for the team with a huge come-from-behind pinfall over the same wrestler he had just lost to recently.

Caito’s win along with several other great performances were the difference in earning that No. 3 seed.

The Braves will battle Dublin in the first round of Saturday’s Area 2 Team Duals in Barnesville.

The meet will begin at 8:30 a.m. and feature 9-10 varsity teams.

Other teams in Area 2 include Bremen, Bowdon, Chattahoochee County, Crawford County, East Laurens, Lamar County, Macon County, Northeast, and Temple.
