Braves edge Eagles at Alford Field

(Franklin, GA) — The Braves baseball team earned its first win of the season 8-6 over the Coosa Eagles Monday afternoon in Franklin.

The game started early with a 3:00 PM first pitch due to school holidays. A big four run fifth inning keyed the win for the Braves.

Senior Auston Wilson earned the victory on the mound after taking over for starter Lee Kay in the top of the fourth inning. Wilson tossed 2 and 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and a walk.

Junior starting catcher A.J. Head came on in relief to stop an Eagle rally in the top of the seventh and earn his first career save. Head retired the Eagles he faced one-two-three to stop the rally.

Leading the way at the plate with two hits apiece were Logan Ward, Ethan Brant, and Dale Thornhill. Wilson and Collin Wright each had two RBI’s to power the run production. Brant also had two steals.

Key RBI base hits from Drew Hopkins and Caden Raines fueled the four-run scoring effort in the fifth.

Head coach Trent Bianco was pleased to get the win over a Class AA school that the Braves could see again during the state playoffs.

“That’s a big win for us but we don’t really look at records too much early in the season. We just try to go 1-0 every time we have a game. Credit Coosa for hanging around and staying in the game. It’s always good to get a feel for a Class AA team you might meet in the first round,” said Bianco.

Bianco was pleased to see his catcher able to drop the gear and head out to the mound to finish the game.

“We had some guys at the end really come through. A.J. Head catching six innings and then coming in to slam the door in the seventh inning is not easy thing to do, but he was fantastic,” Bianco stated.

“Austin Wilson does a good job every time he comes on — he’s a strike thrower that’s always down in the a zone and gives us a chance to win. Lee Kay didn’t have his best stuff today but he battled and kept us in it.”

The Braves (1-3) will next host Central of Carrollton Thursday at 5:30 PM at Alford Field. The squad will start next week off with road trips to Handley on Monday and Bremen on Tuesday. Both games start with a 5:30 PM EST first pitch.

The Braves dropped a 7-2 decision at Pace Academy Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. Senior Lee Kay had a nice day at the plate with two hits including a triple and an RBI.
