(Franklin) – The male Braves tennis team was eliminated from the state playoffs handily this afternoon by the Rabun County Wildcats. The Wildcats, led by coach Michael Keown, took four of five matches in the best of five series.

The lone Braves win came from the number one doubles team made up of senior Dillian Bradley and junior Levi Brown.

The match was an exciting three set affair with Bradley and Brown winning the first set 6-0 before dropping the second set 2-6. In the rubber set, Tyler Darnell and Ashton Hopper put up a strong fight before dropping the set 7-6 after a 7-5 tiebreaker.

In the other doubles match, Jonathon Polle and Jacob Watts outlasted the Braves duo of Brandon Clifton and Tucker Barr (7-6, 6-4) in a close match where the first set was decided by a 7-5 tiebreaker.

In singles competition, all three matches were won by the Wildcats in straight sets. Bryce Dillard knocked off Brent Callahan (6-1,6-2), Jake Toller ousted Jacob Deitrich (6-3,6-0), and Austin Dinofrio dropped Cody Norris (6-0,6-1).

Norris, who played in the number three singles slot this season, could  move to number one next year as Callahan and Deitrich will both graduate. Bradley and Clifton will also graduate from the double’s side.

Coach Rich Fendley was disappointed with the outcome but spoke highly of the group’s season. “This was one of the best groups of boys I have coached, they were a lot of fun to work with. We played well today but just got beat 4-1 by a good opponent in a good match. I do think our play improved during the course of the season,” stated Fendley.

The Wildcats will advance to round two of the state playoffs next week where they will take on a highly vaunted Westminster team from Region 6-AA.

The Lady Braves first round playoff match will take place tomorrow at HHS when they will battle Washington-Wilkes (8-AA) beginning at 4:00p.m.
