The AJC Georgia High School football rankings were released at 4:30 Sunday afternoon and the undefeated Heard County Braves (4-0, 2-0) made their first appearance since 2007 with a #8 ranking .
The Braves handily defeated Region 5-AA foe Kendrick Friday night 42-14 while other ranked teams including rival 5-AA Bowdon were beaten. The Red Devils were upset 19-13 by Manchester.
Ranked just ahead of the Braves are former region opponents the Lamar County Trojans (3-0-1).
A preseason #7 ranking in the AJC poll was the last AJC poll in which the Braves were ranked. Bremen defeated the Braves 51-30 in the opener that year knocking the Braves out of the rankings until Sunday. Fans remember that game well as the one in which Dontavius Jackson was lost for his senior season due to an injury.
Defending State Champion Calhoun (5-0) sits atop the AA rankings as they have all season long. The Braves are #2 in the state offensively averaging 45.3 per game just behind Calhoun who is averaging 45.6 per contest.
The Braves will hit the road this Friday night (7:30 pm) for the only long road trip when they travel to Cussetta to take on another Region 5-AA opponent in Chattahoochee County (2-2, 0-2).
In Region 5-AA standings, the Braves and Manchester are tied at the top as the only two undefeated teams.
Coach Barron and the Braves will face of at Staples next Friday, October 12 (7:30 pm) in what could be the game which determines the region champion.
