Braves honored with Region 5-AA football awards

The names of the 2012 All Region 5-AA football teams were released today and not surprisingly the Heard County Braves amassed a plethora of awards including two of the biggest that were announced .

Sophomore running back Duranta Dunson led the way being named as the Region 5-AA Offensive Player of the Year.

Dunson was dominate all year long with very impressive stats that might have been even better had the Braves not been involved in so many blow-outs,  limiting his playing time in several games.

The speedy back carried the ball 157 times for 1,622 yards at an average of more than 10 yards per carry. He also scored 24 touchdowns including two kick-offs returned for scores. Defensively, he also led the team in tackles with 87 and also intercepted four passes. It was the second straight year he was named to the first team offense.

The Defensive Player of the Year Award went to Manchester senior Clentavious Smith. Braves head coach Tim Barron was named as the Region 5-AA Coach of the Year after the team finished with a perfect regular season record.

Since arriving in Franklin in 2002, Barron  has become the most successful coach in school history with an overall record of 85-39 and state playoff appearances in 10 of 11 seasons. This is the third time he has been recognized as region coach of the year.

Senior Hank Barnes was named the 2012 Region 5-AA Scholar Athlete of the Year. Barnes, also a very accomplished wrestler, was an anchor on the defensive front for the Braves this season.

It was a due honor for the senior who has always represented the Braves well not just on the field of play but also in the classroom setting.

Senior Dalton Pate and Junior Jake Edwards were both named as members of the first team all region offense.

The two lineman, who each will be competing in post-season all-star games in Atlanta, were a force up front in every game this season leading to the great success of the skill players behind them. This was Pate’s second time being named to the first team.

Senior defensive lineman Cody Stephens and senior linebacker Dillian Bradley were both named to the first team defense. Stephens had three sacks and 64 tackles (13 for a loss) this season while Bradley notched 71 tackles (10 for a loss) and four interceptions.

Junior Jonathon Hunt was named as the first team punter. Given the Braves successes all season, Hunt did not get to show his punting prowess that often; but his 62 yard punt in the state playoffs certainly showed off his talented punting leg.

The Braves also had several other athletes named to the second team All Region 5-AA squad. They included Hunt (QB), junior Ta Freeland (RB/DB), senior Damon Pearson (WR), Sophomore Elijah Toney (TE, LB), freshman Collin Nutt (K), junior Tori Rogers (DB), and senior Brandon Wiggins (DL).

Hunt, Bradley, and Senior Corey Freeman were named to the all academic team.

Four Braves were also named to the all freshman team. They were Austin Barron, Hunter Lane, Lashon Echols, and Quay Daniel.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Levi Brown (OL), Jace Mock (OL), Freeman (DL), Barnes (DL), Bradley (WR), Rogers (RB), and Hunt (LB).
