Braves hosting Region 5-AA tourney games this Tuesday

(Franklin, GA) — The Braves and Lady Braves closed out the regular season Friday night with home match-ups versus Lamar County with the Region 5-AA tournament set for next week for both teams.

The Lady Braves fell to top-seeded Lamar County 58-46 while the Braves knocked off the Trojans 49-29 to close out their regular season slate.

The Lady Braves finished as the No. 3 seed meaning both teams will get to host early round tournament games in Franklin this Tuesday night.

There will be four games played in Franklin Tuesday with the winners of all four games advancing to the region semifinals at Spencer High in Columbus on Thursday. The Region Championship games will also be played at Spencer on Friday as a result of the Greenwave’s No. 1 boys seeding.

The Lady Braves will face the region No. 6 Jordan Red Jackets at 7:00 PM Tuesday where Coach Helen Akins’s squad will be looking for a third win over the region’s lowest seed.

The Lady Braves (9-14, 6-4) defeated the Jackets (1-21, 0-10) by final scores of 46-28 and 36-29 during the regular season.

With a win on Tuesday, the Lady Braves would secure not only a shot at the Region 5-AA semifinals, but a fourth straight state playoff appearance under Coach Akins.

No. 4 Spencer will face No. 5 Temple in the other play-in game at 4:00 Tuesday with No. Lamar County and No. 2 Callaway waiting to host the winners on Thursday.

The defending 5-AA Champion Lady Braves would face Callaway in the semifinals. In the boys tournament, the No. 4 Braves (6-18, 5-6) will host No. 5 Callaway (4-15, 4-7) at 5:30 PM Tuesday in what figures to be another very close game as the teams split the two regular season contests with each team winning by four points on their home floor.

The defending 5-AA Champion Braves edged the Cavs 52-48 at home on January 2 before the Cavs returned the favor upending the Braves 68-64 on January 19 in Lagrange. With a win the Braves would likely meet No.1 Spencer in the semifinals and would earn a slot in the state playoffs.

No. 3 Jordan will battle No. 6 Lamar County in the final game of the day Tuesday at HHS with the winner likely meeting No. 2 Temple on Thursday.

The tournament will feature a lot of parity with several teams having at least some shot to win one of the two titles.

Top scorers for the Braves in Friday night’s win over the Trojans were junior Alijah Huzzie with 13, upstart freshman Ayden Cannon with nine, and senior Darius Matthews with eight.

Leading the way for the Lady Braves was sophomore Morgan Kay with a career high 16 points and senior Sage Kelley with 14.
