Braves notch big win in Region 5-AA opener

(Franklin) — A stingy second half defense propelled Coach Paul Fitz-Simons and the Braves varsity basketball team to their fourth straight win Tuesday night.

The 43-38 win over Bowdon in Franklin came in front of one of the larger home crowds in recent history and moved the Braves to 8-6 on the season and 1-0 in Region 5-AA.

It was another hard-fought comeback win for the Braves who trailed by five (13-8) after the first quarter and by seven at the half (24-17), but Coach Fitz-Simon’s guys turned the tables in the second half allowing the Devils only 14 points. The Braves led 31-30 heading to the fourth.

“Anytime you are in region play you want to try to hold serve at home and then get half of them on the road,” said Fitz-Simons after the game.

“To come in here tonight and beat a good well-coached Bowdon team says volumes about our kids’ toughness. We were resilient tonight — I thought we were down for the count but we just kept fighting. I am so proud of these kids tonight — they did a good job.”

Jordarius Foster continued to shine leading the team with 13 points including 11 in the second half. Foster was 3-for-4 from the line in the fourth quarter. Darius Matthews had eight, D.J. Emory six, and Christian Murray five.

Octavious Meadows led the Devils in scoring with 13. C.J. Brewer had eight.

The Braves face another tough region battle Friday when they travel to Temple (7:30) before returning to HHS on Saturday for a non-region rematch with Pacelli. The Braves dropped a close 68-66 game at Pacelli on December 19.
