Brave head coach Keith Simmons goes over strategy with his team. The varsity Braves (3-1) are off to their best start since 2008.

(Carrollton, GA) — Head coach Keith Simmons and the Brave varsity boys basketball team improved to 3-1 with a convincing 76-56 win over Central of Carrollton Saturday afternoon.

The 3-1 start is the team’s best record through four games since 2008 and the new got even better with the return of stand-out athlete Emory Jones who stepped onto the court for the first time since his freshman season.

Jones missed the first three games of this season with a football shoulder injury and missed his entire sophomore season after suffering a broken leg in the football playoff game versus Fitzgerald last year.

Although still early in the season, the squad seems poised to make a run at least in Region 5-AA if not further after winning three straight. The Braves led 33-17 at the half.

Unselfish play paid off for the team as five different Braves scored in double figures in the win over the Lions.

Senior Jordarius Foster again led the way with 14, but not far behind were senior Dekari Brewer and sophomore Alijah Huzzie who each scored 13. Nine of Huzzie’s points came from beyond the arc.

Jones came off the bench to score 11, junior Darius Matthews had 10, and senior Christian Murray finished with nine points.

In girl’s action, coach Helen Akins and the Lady Braves moved to 5-2 on the season with a 42-30 win, the second of the season over the Lady Lions of Central.

Kimberly Harris continued to dominate on the inside again leading the team with 21 points while grabbing 13 rebounds.

Hannah Sanders also was big on the boards with 15 rebounds and point guard Sage Kelley came close to a double-double in assists and rebounds.

The Braves and Lady Braves will look to stay hot this Tuesday night when they return home to face Randolph County, AL (6:00/7:30 PM).

The two teams meet in home and home contests this week with the Braves traveling to Randolph County on Friday.
