Braves Open Season at Alabama State Power Handley

Jake Edwards, Dalton Pate, Jonathon Hunt, and Tyler Wynn

The Heard County Braves will cross the Alabama border this Friday night for the first time since 1988 when they traveled to Wadley and defeated the Bulldogs handily 44-7.

The 2011 Braves, led by head coach Tim Barron, will open this season facing a much bigger challenge than the ’88 team as they are pitted against an opponent that is considered one of the favorites to win the Alabama 3A State Championship.

Currently ranked #2 in the state according to Max Preps, the Handley Tigers will present a difficult challenge for a Braves squad which features very little upper class experience with only five seniors.

Sophomore QB Jonathon Hunt will lead an offense onto the field looking to build off of a good performance in the Westminster scrimmage last week where the Braves surprisingly outscored the GHSA #6 ranked AA squad 19-0 during the three varsity quarters of action.

In the controlled scrimmage Hunt connected with Senior WR Brandon Smith three different times for touchdowns. However, this week expect for the Braves to rely heavily on Senior RB Tyler Wynn to control the clock against a very athletic and physical Tiger team.

Last year, in the first ever meeting between the two schools which are only separated by about 20 miles and one state border, the Tigers dominated the game on both sides of the ball and won going away 42-17.

The Roanoke fans showed up in force for the opener last year as Staples Stadium hosted perhaps it’s biggest visiting crowd in it’s history. The Tigers are led by veteran head coach Mike Battles who owns over 200 wins in three states including a GHSA State Championship with Irwin County in 1975.

The Braves fans are expected to return the favor attendance wise this year as they eagerly seek to avenge the show of support by the Tiger fans last year.

Look for a very large line of traffic on HWY 34 headed out of Franklin late Friday afternoon for the 8PM EST kick-off.
