Braves Overcome Halftime Deficit at Spencer

Coach Barron and the Braves football team survived Friday Night’s tilt with a scrappy Spencer Greenwave team in Columbus to finish their long October road trip at 3-1.

The Braves defeated Spencer 24-18, but actually trailed the Greenwave 12-8 at halftime. The Braves took advantage of a 16-0 third quarter to put the game seemingly out of reach of the Greenwave, but a touchdown from Quarterback Tarvaraska Davis to Toney Williams with 7:17 to play in the game brought then within just six points.

Spencer had a chance to come back when they took possession late in the game but an interception by Jonathan Hunt sealed the win for the Braves.

The offense was again led by Duranta Dunson who rushed for 171 yards on the ground and scored all three two-point conversions. Duranta will have a chance this Friday in the regular season finale to cross the 1000 yard mark which would be quite an achievement especially for a freshman.

The Braves three touchdowns came on rushes from Hunt and Senior Tyler Wynn as well as a Hunt pass to Brandon Smith. Defensively, Brandon Smith also had an interception and Senior Blake Hardy led the team with 15 big tackles.

The Braves will clinch the Region 5-AA State Playoff #3 seed with either a win over Manchester at home or a Temple loss to the Region #1  Carver Tigers. Callaway is locked in at #2.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early this Friday night as it will be Senior night and a pregame ceremony will honor all Senior players, band members, and cheerleaders. (Photos by Rodney East)
