(Barnesville, GA) — The Braves varsity wrestling team traveled to Lamar County High School in Barnesville Saturday for the Area 2 Dual meet and brought home a fourth place finish after competing in four matches.

The Braves knocked off Lamar County and Bowdon but two losses to a stout Dublin Fighting Irish team left the Braves out of the top two spots.

As expected, Bremen dominated the meet and will carry the No. 1 seed to Macon for the state duals next weekend. East Laurens High School finished in second place and will also advance to the state meet. Dublin finished in third place but does not advance to state.

Coach Kyle Yates’ squad battled hard, but some nagging injuries and recent lay-offs due to those injuries made the going tough against the Irish.

Defending state runner-up Matt Brown re-aggravated an injury in the early going in Barnesville and missed his last two matches.

“We didn’t start out well against Dublin obviously but we wrestled well against Lamar and Bowdon, and we did wrestle a lot better against Dublin the second time around. I can’t say enough about our kids — our kids will fight and do whatever they can for you — we just came up a little short today.”

The top performance of the day for the Braves belonged to Sam Brown (182) who scored three pins including the only pin of the day versus Dublin.

Other Braves who scored 12 points for two pins over Lamar and Bowdon included Blake McAdams, Gage Cannon, Matt Nilson, and Andrew Cannon.

The match with Bowdon was cut short after a serious injury to junior Ryan Haehnlien. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and had to be taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

According to his coach he is expected to be ok and was released from the hospital late Saturday evening. The Braves led 30-12 at the time and the Devils chose to forfeit the remainder of their matches.

The Braves will now try to regroup in preparation for the traditional meets which begin in three weeks with the area meet at Bremen on January 29-30.

The traditional sectionals are February 5-6 and the GHSA Traditional State Championships take place February 11-13 at the Infinite Energy Arena (formerly Gwinnett Arena) in Duluth, GA.
