Braves Recognized with Region 5-AA Football Awards

(Franklin) — The winners of 2015 All Region 5-AA football awards were announced last week and the Region Champion Heard County Braves garnered several awards including three of the most prestigious.

Senior running back Austin Barron was named as the Region 5-AA Offensive Player of the Year.

Austin had a stellar campaign at running back and finished with over 1,000 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns despite missing several games with an ankle injury. He had a total of 1036 yards on just 133 touches for an awesome average of 7.8 yards per carry.

The Defensive Player of the Year Award once again went to senior defensive lineman Matt Brown for the second straight season.

Brown bested his own school record for tackles by a defensive lineman with 132 after setting the record in 2014 with 120.

Brown also had 5.5 sacks, 19 tackles for a loss, five quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery.

Braves head coach Tim Barron was named as the Region 5-AA Coach of the Year after his team once again captured the region title.

Since arriving in Franklin in 2002, Barron is by far the most successful coach in school history with an overall record of 110-51 and state playoff appearances in 13 of 14 seasons. This is the fifth time he has been recognized as region coach of the year.

Additional Braves named to the first team offense included sophomore quarterback Emory Jones, junior wide receiver Austin Miller, and senior offensive lineman Chandler Moon.

Jones passed for 1213 yards and 14 touchdowns with only five interceptions and also gained 293 yards and scored twice on the ground.

Miller led the Braves at receiver with six touchdown catches and a 23.1 yard per catch average. Moon consistently graded out well at offensive tackle week in and week out.

Braves honored by being named to the first team defense were senior defensive lineman Austin Dean and Diamond Delgado, junior linebacker Peyton Ehlers, sophomore defensive back Jaden Moreland, and junior defensive back Mike Holmes.

Dean finished with an awesome 128 tackles including a team-high 27 for a loss with five sacks. Delgado led the team in sacks with nine and had 111 tackles including 14 behind the line of scrimmage. Ehlers had 84 tackles with 13 for a loss and six quarterback hurries.

Moreland set a team record with seven interceptions and also caused three fumbles on 71 tackles. Holmes had 84 tackles and also caused three fumbles to along with his team-high five pass break-ups.

Junior Trey Wiggins was the only Brave to be named all-region at two positions, first team punter and second team kicker. Wiggins had an impressive perfect season on extra points (42/42) and field goals (4/4).

Heard County players named to the All Region 5-AA second team were senior Chandler Polk (WR), seniors Andrew Cannon (OL) and Jacob Bishop (OL), and junior linebacker Jonta Gray.

Accruing honorable mention awards were senior Rad Brooks (DL), junior Ethan Brandt (LB), and junior long snapper Michael Cadwell.

A host of Braves also were named to the all academic team including Trey Alford, Trey Wiggins, Matt Brown, Austin Dean, Austin Barron, Jacob Bishop, Chandler Moon, Ethan Brandt, and Chandler Polk.

Five 9th-grade Braves were named to the All-Freshman team including Alijah Huzzie, Andrew Leak, Michael Cheney, Kezman Kelley, and Gage Cannon.
