Braves Shut-Out Red Jackets 33-0

The Heard County Braves moved to 1-0 in Region 5-AA Friday Night with a homecoming win over the Jordan Red Jackets from Columbus.

Coach Barron addresses the team after the 33-0 win

Despite a sloppy first half of play by both teams with several penalties, the Braves were able to push across two touchdowns late in the second quarter and led at the half 13-0.

The Braves amassed 442 yards on offense while the Jackets managed only 18. Senior Tyler Wynn again led the ground game with 16 rushes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Freshman Duranta Dunson had 100 yards on just six carries. This was Dunson’s first 100 yard rushing game but several more are expected in the future from the highly touted freshman.

The offensive highlight of the game came when Sophomore QB Jonathan Hunt connected with Brandon Smith on a 75-yard TD pass in the second half, and the combination also connected for one other TD in the game.

Tori Rogers also had three catches in the game for 64 yards and played well on defense. The undermanned Jackets never got much going on either side of the ball and the Braves won by a final of 33-0.

On defense the Braves were led by Brandon Wiggins with eight tackles and 2.5 sacks, Elijah Toney with six tackles and 1.5 sacks, Dillian Bradley with seven tackles, and Tori Rogers who came away with an interception.

Coach Tim Barron was emphatic as he talked to his team after the game. He told them that they must play better next week or they would be embarrassed.

The Braves host AA powerhouse the Carver (Columbus) Tigers next week in another region match-up before hitting the road for four straight weeks in October.
