Braves smash Cherokees 42-14

The Braves moved to 4-0 Friday night after a solid effort on both sides of the ball yielded a 42-14 final over the Kendrick Cherokees out of Columbus.

The Braves dominated from the opening snap in which Duranta Dunson scored on a 61-yard rush from scrimmage.

Dunson had four total touchdown runs in the first half to stake the Braves to a 35-0 halftime lead but saw little action in the second half as Coach Barron played a lot of the younger kids.

Collin Nutt kicked a 24-yard field goal in the first half which was the first of his career.

Quarterback Jonathon Hunt continued to be impressive both running and passing. Hunt completed a 41-yard TD pass to Senior Damon Pearson and he also added a 6-yard TD run himself in the third quarter.

Elijah Toney had a couple of big catches including a 52-yard strike from Hunt to set up the fourth Dunson TD.

The offensive line continued to dominate the line of scrimmage all game long. Through four games they have yet to allow a sack. Tori Rogers had a big interception on defense.

In other region action Manchester upset Bowdon’s homecoming 19-13 to really shake things up in 5-AA.

The Braves home match-up with the Blue Devils now looms large in two weeks with major region championship and state playoff implications.

The Braves travel to Chattahoochee Co. next week to take on the Panthers in Cusseta, Ga.

Several members of the HHS Class of 1967 were in attendance for the game on their class reunion weekend.

This article will be updated later this weekend with final game stats and exclusive video of Dunson’s 61-yard TD on the opening play from scrimmage.

Congrats to all involved, coaching staff, the players, cheerleaders, band, booster club, parents.. I wish to say a special ” WTG ” to a friend and co – worker, Coach Randall Curbow. HC is lucky to have such a dedicated, experienced and highly family based football coaching staff. I can tell you first hand, after knowing Randall, that the football coaching staff works hard an contrary to public option, very under compensated for the long hours being away from their own families. WTG HC BRAVES FOOTBALL!
