Braves split twin bill to take series at Callaway

(Lagrange, GA) — The Braves split a doubleheader at Callaway Thursday, dropping game one 13-2 before bouncing back for a 6-2 win in the nightcap to take the three game series over the arch rivals.

Callaway’s game one win was important for them, however, as it locked them into the No. 2 seed in Region 5-AA heading into the state playoffs.

The Braves will be the No. 4 seed in 5-AA and will travel for the state playoffs beginning Wednesday, April 24. Region 5-AA matches up with Region 8-AA in round one this year. Bremen will be the No. 1 seed and Lamar County is the No. 3 seed.

In the game two win Thursday, Dale Thornhill and Tanner Collins led the way to the Braves’ win.

Thornhill pitched his best game of the season thus far going the distance while allowing just three hits and no walks to earn his fourth win.

He gave up just two earned runs and struck out five in the 6-2 win.

At the plate, the big blow came off the bat of the senior Tanner Collins in the form of a 2-run homer that drove home Mason Rollings. Collins was 2-for-4 in the game.

Hayden McCosh had two hits and Caden Raines doubled.

Will Hammett and Tray Owens each doubled and had an RBI in the game one loss.

Coach Trent Bianco was pleased with Thornhill’s performance and the bounce back effort of his squad after the tough loss in game one.

“I’m proud of how our guys came out and responded in game two after getting punched in the mouth in game one,” said Bianco after the game.

“That’s the best Dale Thornhill has pitched for us and just like I said about Owens on Tuesday Dale has already been good for us and he was great tonight. We really needed someone to show some leadership for us after getting bloodied in game one and Dale did just that.”

The Braves will close out the regular season with three non-region games next week. The team will travel to Handley (5:30 PM EST) on Tuesday and Harris County Thursday (5:30 PM) before returning home for the final game of the season at Alford Field versus Central on Friday (5:30 PM).
