Braves split weekend games with OMA, Trinity

(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County Braves varsity basketball team split contests versus Oak Mountain Academy and Trinity Christian over the weekend. The Braves notched a 58-49 win at OMA in Carrollton Friday night before bouncing right back early Saturday afternoon to host Trinity.

The Braves fell to Trinity 61-50. The split evens the squad’s record at 2-2 on the season with a Senior Night game versus Northgate scheduled for tomorrow night at HCHS followed by an appearance in the SMI Christmas Classic this weekend in Carroll County.

The Braves will travel to Bowdon to take on the Red Devils this Friday night at 8:30 PM to kick off the tourney.

Three seniors contributed in a big way the Braves to Friday night’s win over OMA as Ethan Lawson, Kahlil Cofield, and Ayden Cannon all reached double-digits in scoring.

Lawson led the team with 14 points including three buckets from beyond the arc. Cofield scored 12 including two shots from long distance and Cannon scored 10.

Other leading scorers were D.J. Herring with seven, Orrin Rowley with six, and Chance Curbow with five.

In Saturday’s loss to Trinity, it was Cannon and Isaiah O’Neal leading the way with 11 points each while Rowley scored nine. O’Neal also led the team with five rebounds. Ty Smith and Jameer Cook each scored four.

Second year head coach Derek Smith says the team has a lot of adjustments to make this year with a larger roster that includes six seniors.

The team is also trying to overcome missing two full weeks due to COVID-19 and the fact that several team members have had little practice following the recent conclusion to the football season.

“This is the first time since I’ve been here that we have had competition and enough guys that can all play. Guys just have to learn that just because they started last year does not mean anything this season. They just have to learn to compete and they will — it is just going to take some time,” said Smith after Saturday’s game.

The Braves will host Northgate Tuesday night at 7:30 PM following the girls game at 6:00 PM. Seniors from both squads will be recognized between games. See the full SMI Bracket for this weekend below.
