Braves streak through Columbus

(Columbus, GA) — The varsity Braves basketball team won its eighth consecutive game Friday night knocking off the Jordan Red Jackets 60-47 on the road.

With the region win, Coach Keith Simmons and squad improved to 18-4 overall and 8-0 in region play.

The Braves control their own destiny for the top regular season seed in the tourney which will decide state playoff seeds, but with only two games to play, the Braves have already clinched one of the top two regular season seeds and the first state playoff spot by a Heard County boy’s team since 2003.

The top two seeds at the region tourney receive byes into the semifinals. Leading the way in Friday night’s win were three Braves in double figures.

Jordarius Foster led the way with 13, while both Emory Jones and Alijah Huzzie each tallied 11 points. Huzzie was 5-for-6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Darius Matthews and Dekari Brewer each scored nine.

In the girl’s game, Coach Helen Akins’ banged up line-up continued to struggle falling to the Lady Red Jackets 44-42.

Kimberly Harris led the way with 20 followed by Ally Harris with 10.

The Lady Braves (16-6, 6-2) remain in control of their own destiny for the top region tourney seed, but can ill afford another loss with the Temple Lady Tigers close behind them.

The Braves and Lady Braves each have two remaining games, hosting Spencer Tuesday on senior night before traveling to Lamar County Friday night to close out the regular season.
