Braves sweep Blue Devils in regular season finales

(Bremen, GA) — The Braves varsity basketball teams both ended the regular season with wins Friday night with each coming in very different ways.

The Lady Braves fended off a fierce late comeback by the Lady Blue Devils to win 47-44 and clinch the No. 2 seed in Region 5-AA while the Braves routed the Blue Devils 71-58 fueled by a strong performance off the bench from freshman Alijah Huzzie.

Huzzie led all scorers in the boy’s game with 19 including five baskets from beyond the 3-point arc.

“Huzzie is such a good scorer with such a good touch,” said Coach Paul Fitz-Simons after Friday’s game. “He doesn’t play like a freshman or have the mentality of a freshman — as we saw when he played quarterback in the fall — we’ve got three more years with him and we’re not done yet this season.”

Fitz-Simons was pleased with the region road win Friday night as well as the results of his first regular season as head coach of the Braves.

“The guys were still a little bit down from the Bowdon game but the way they came out and played hard, responded and executed well in the first quarter made me really proud of them,” said Fitz-Simons. “We did a good job finishing the season at .500 and that’s not too bad.”

Other top scorers for the Braves were Christian Murray with 10, Jordarius Foster with nine, and Darius Matthews with eight.

Senior Dylan Kierbow led the Devils with 13.

The Braves end the season at 12-12 and 5-5 in the region.

The Bowdon Red Devils also ended the season with a 5-5 region record and as of tonight the playoff seedings are still not crystal clear.

Manchester finished with the top seed and will host the region semifinals next Thursday. Manchester and Temple will each advance automatically to the semi-finals on Thursday in Manchester.

The Braves, Red Devils, Bremen, and Chattahoochee County will begin the playoffs Tuesday night in either Franklin or Bowdon. Seedings are expected to be finalized Sunday afternoon.

In the girl’s game the Lady Braves just edged the Lady Blue Devils 47-44 when the Blue Devils missed a potential game tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The close margin was  large improvement for a Bremen squad that fell to the Lady Braves by 16 points in Franklin on January 19.

A Sage Kelley 3-point basket gave Coach Helen Akins and the Lady Braves a 12 point lead before the Lady Devils battled back into it late. Only three points were scored by both teams combined over the last four minutes of the very physical game.

Senior Madison Whitehead led the Lady Braves with 13 points and junior Kimberly Harris had 10. Hannah Sanders and Kelley each had six.

The Lady Braves will host a semi-final game on Thursday at Manchester and earn an automatic trip to the state playoffs for the second straight season.
