Braves sweep Tigers on home court

(Franklin, GA) — The Brave basketball teams each moved to 2-1 in region play Tuesday night with home wins over the visiting Temple Tigers.

The Lady Braves held off a late surge by the Lady Tigers to hold on for a 44-41 victory. The Lady Braves led 26-17 at the half and 38-28 after three quarters before the Tigers came back to make a game of it in the final minutes.

Sophomore Tori Caldwell led the scoring for the home team with 16. Senior point guard Sage Kelley also had a nice effort with 10 points including making six of eight from the foul line.

Freshman Sophia Long and junior Haley Bennett each scored eight points. Ruby Collins led the lady Tigers with 18 points.

In boys’ action, it was the Braves that pulled away late thanks to some solid free throw shooting in the fourth quarter.

The game was knotted at 23-23 at the half and the Braves led by just one at 41-40 with under two minutes to play.

Darius Matthews was five of six from the charity stripe in the final two minutes to seal the hard fought home win.

Freshman Kahlil Cofield also hit two big foul shots late. Cofield saw extended playing time in the game also scoring two 3-point baskets.

Junior Alijah Huzzie led all scorers with 19 including three from beyond the arc. Matthews also finished in double digits with 10. Cofield tallied eight total points and Tray Dunson finished with six.

Javin Boles led the Tigers with 16.

Region play continues for both squads this Friday night when they travel to Lamar County for important road games versus the Trojans.

The teams return home next Tuesday night to host Spencer before traveling to Callaway on Friday, January 19.
