(Franklin) — The Braves baseball team and first year head coach Trent Bianco travel to Rome tomorrow for the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs where they will take on a solid Region 7-AA opponent in the Coosa Eagles.
The Braves will be looking to advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2011 when they knocked off Dade County in a tough three game series at home.
Leading the way to Coosa will be Braves senior pitcher/shortstop Taylor Smith who leads the squad with a .476 batting average, 29 RBI’s, and 17 stolen bases in 17 attempts.
Another leader for the Braves is freshman Lee Kay who has posted perhaps the top rookie numbers in Brave history. Kay enters this weekend with a .406 average to go along with three home runs and 21 RBI’s.
Junior Dakota Christopher has also put up solid numbers at the plate as usual batting .471 with 24 RBI’s, and newcomer third baseman Tristan Brown rounds out the top hitters with a .469 average and 30 base hits.
Coach Bianco has high expectations for his squad heading into the tough series with the Eagles.
“The guys are upbeat. We ended the year on a real strong note by going to Bowdon and winning there and going to Central on Saturday and getting them in extra innings,” Bianco told Corey Cusick of the Times-Georgian. “So our confidence is high right now. It’s high at the right time. Every single day at practice so far has been good. The guys have come in, bounced around and we’re excited about this opportunity on Friday.”
