Braves Wrestling Program on the Rise

The varsity wrestling program at Heard high school has made some big strides in just the last few months thanks to the arrival of new head coach Justin Ransom.

The Braves, for the first time since 2006 are fielding a full squad this year and the results have been quite an improvement early on as the team has done very well in their first two matches.

At the Lagrange duals on December 3rd, the Braves finished in third place after defeating Callaway 66-12, Newnan (5-A) 42-38, tying Bowdon(A) 42-42 and falling to Lagrange (3-A) handily and Cedartown(3-A) by only two points.

Seniors Blake Hardy and Tyler Wynn led the way with a combined 9-0 record with 9 pins. Taron Person also went 3-2 with 3 pins.

On December 6th, the Braves traveled to Mt. Zion where they again found some success gaining a split when they defeated Chapel Hill (5-A) and lost a very close match to the Eagles of Mt. Zion(A).

In the Chapel Hill win, Blake Hardy and Adam Morgan had stand-out matches with each having a pin.

Ta Freeland battled hard, beating his opponent 19-10, and got momentum rolling for the team with an exciting match and tough performance.

In the loss to the very solid and  more experienced Mt. Zion squad, Tyler Wynn, Hank Barnes, Blake Hardy, and Zane woods all recorded pins.

Taron Person, Ta Freeland, Jordan Timmons, and Tori Rogers battled hard but fell just short to their opponents.

“Seniors Blake Hardy and Tyler Wynn are leading the team in performances and records each with six pins while Blake is undefeated and Tyler’s only loss came at a higher weight class. Bill Singleton, Ta Freeland, Taron Person, and Hank Barnes, are following them up with solid performances, stated Ransom.

The Braves are competing today in the CRWA tournament.

“Other wrestlers who are showing strong promise and having success are Jordan Timmons, Zane Woods, Adam Morgan, Tori Rogers, James Sprayberry. With continuing hard work and learning everyday, all these guys show the skill and drive to be on the podium at the state tournament in February,” added Ransom.

The Braves will host Mt. Zion, Temple, and Troup in their first home competition of the year tomorrow night beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Heard High gymnasium. Everyone is encouraged to come out and show your support for our up and coming wrestling program.
