52-year-old local man dies in crash

(Franklin, GA) — A local man was killed in a single-vehicle crash that authorities believe likely happened in the overnight hours either late Friday or early this morning.

52-year-old Tommy Wayne Wessinger of Franklin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in a swampy area adjacent to Joe Stephens Road in eastern Heard County.

According to a report released this afternoon by Trooper Chris Davison with the Georgia State Patrol, Wessinger was traveling northbound on Joe Stephens when he left the roadway and over-corrected causing his vehicle (a 2008 Honda Accord) to come to rest on its roof in the water.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Trooper Davison believes the crash happened sometime between dusk Friday and early Saturday morning. A passer-by noticed the exposed wheels of the Accord on top of the water this morning and made the call to authorities.

The accident is still under investigation, but it is believed alcohol may have been a factor pending GBI crime lab toxicology reports.
