Brown Earns Spot in State Final Match

(Macon, GA) — Heard High junior wrestler Matt Brown continued to defy the odds Friday at the Centreplex in Macon where he pulled off two big wins over 30+ win private school wrestlers by pinfall to become the first wrestler in school history to advance to the State Championship match at the Class AA GHSA State Wrestling meet.

Brown (27-12) defeated junior grappler Rory Alston (37-21) of Greater Atlanta Christian by second round pin in the quarterfinals early in the day and then returned Friday evening to knock off Jack Walsh ( 35-9) by pinfall in the semi-finals.

“My confidence went up after my first win and then i just went out and wrestled,” said Brown after his semi-final win Friday night. “I try to take it one match at a time and wrestle hard — just so happy to be in the finals!”

It seemed that Brown would likely face a familiar foe in the finals on Saturday before an upset occurred in the other Class AA semi-final where senior Carson Rich of The Lovett School (23-5) upset senior Alex Gardner of Lamar County.

Gardner had beaten Brown in both the area and sectional finals over the past two weeks.

Brown will be going for his third straight win over a private school wrestler from Region 6-AA when he battles Rich on Saturday at the Centreplex.

“I’m just so proud for Matt– all of his hard work is being shown,” said head coach Kyle Yates. ” It is such a great accomplishment for him and Heard County. He has really come on this past month and has just had an awesome year for us!”

The final matches in all classifications begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Stay tuned to The Heard Citizen facebook page for live coverage and updates from Macon Saturday afternoon.
