COVID-19 outbreak confirmed at Franklin Nursing Home

(Franklin, GA) — A spokesperson for PruittHealth confirmed to the Heard Citizen today that a vast outbreak of COVID-19 is currently ongoing at the Franklin Nursing Home.

The company’s facility located at 360 South River Road is the only long-term care facility in Heard County.

The Heard Citizen first became aware of the outbreak when case numbers published as part of the Georgia Department of Community Health’s Long-Term Care Facility COVID-19 Report increased in this week’s reports.

PruittHealth’s own website was not reporting the influx of new cases as of yesterday and when asked about the possible outbreak by email, the spokesperson for the company first stated that the Franklin facility only had one staff member infected and zero patient infections.

The spokesperson said via email today that the information reported yesterday was not accurate due to a website reporting error that has since been corrected.

The PruittHealth website (see graphic) now indicates the facility is actually dealing with 25 positive cases of COVID-19 among the current census of 58 patients (43.1%) along with 13 positive cases among nursing home staff members.

There are 78 total beds at the facility according to the report.

The nursing home has reported just one death at the facility with COVID-19. This death was first reported by The Heard Citizen in May.

PruittHealth’s Communications Department issued a statement this morning in regards to the current COVID-19 situation.

“The health and safety of our patients and staff are top priorities at PruittHealth. Currently, there are 25 patients and 13 staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19 at PruittHealth—Franklin. The Alert Code for this center remains Red, meaning visitors and nonessential personnel are prohibited from entering the location, with the exception of limited, approved compassionate care visits,” said the company in the statement.

The statement also that strict infection protocols are being followed while the facility is under a Code Red. A Code Red is issued when just one positive case is discovered at a facility.

“PruittHealth – Franklin has been strictly following enhanced infection control protocols. These include increasing cleaning frequency, postponing communal activities, ceasing visitation, as well as screening staff and patients daily. We actively monitor staffing levels and appropriate supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE), and have installed an air scrubber system. We also have built isolation units to work to contain the virus.”

According to information at the PruittHealth emergency preparedness page, the Franklin location has the largest percentage of positive patients (43.1%) among 64 Georgia facilities managed by the company.

The company statement also offered contact information for employees, patients, or family members that need to reach out with questions.

“PruittHealth follows closely the guidance from public health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
