Crews work overnight to restore power after 18-wheeler crashes into family’s back yard (Updated)

The truck just after being pulled away from the embankment early this morning.

Crews from both Georgia Power and Carroll EMC are working to restore power to some homes north of Franklin after a tractor-trailer crashed into the backyard of a residence at the intersection of Franklin Parkway and the Five Notch Road.

Tim Massa stated that his whole family was awoken by what sounded like an earthquake at about 11:30 p.m. last night.

The semi-truck,which appeared to be owned by Mohawk Industries, careened down a steep embankment before crashing into and snapping two very large power poles at the bases and burying into a steep embankment.

The Georgia State Patrol has yet to conclude its investigation and have not released the name of the driver who was transported by Heard County EMS to Tanner Hospital in Carrollton with unknown injuries.

Special power trucks had to be called in due to the very large poles that were affected so the process was delayed for a few hours. At about 6:00 a.m. the power poles were reinforced to allow for the removal of the truck which took place around 6:45 a.m.

Traffic was blocked in three directions last night as power crews awaited heavy equipment trucks to secure the poles.

The cause of the accident is still unknown but no skid marks were present at the scene.

“It appears to me that the truck went air born for a good distance and that the driver is very lucky to be alive. Our power went out immediately at the time of the crash,” stated Massa. “We feel really blessed that the truck did not hit our home. The truck only missed my son’s bedroom by about 20 yards.”

Further details about the cause of the crash as well as the identity of the driver will be released as soon as it becomes available.

(UPDATE: The Georgia State Patrol reports the driver of the truck as 45-year-old Scott Bishop from Rome, GA. Bishop was not seriously injured in the crash. Troopers say that it appears Bishop took a curve to fast and lost control after over-correcting before heading down the embankment an striking the utility poles. No charges have been filed.)
