(Franklin) — A former Heard High School student is in critical condition at an Atlanta hospital today after he was hit by a truck earlier this week.

The accident occurred around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday evening when 20-year-old Daytona Blankenship of Franklin was walking on the eastbound shoulder of HWY 100 between Corinth and Hogansville in Troup County.

According to the Georgia State Trooper J.P. Hogan, Blankenship entered the roadway and was hit by an eastbound truck. He was initially transported to West Georgia Medical Center in Lagrange before later being moved to Atlanta Medical Center.

According to his father, Daytona’s condition is very serious at this time.

“Daytona is stable right now, but he is still in critical condition,” said Greg Blankenship Thursday afternoon. “They are working on keeping the swelling on his brain down at the moment. Our family would appreciate all the prayers we can get right now.”

Blankenship graduated from Heard High with the Class of 2013.
