Heard County Schools closed Tuesday

(Franklin, GA) — Due to the possibility of winter weather and adverse travel conditions in the area Tuesday, Heard County School officials decided Monday afternoon to make the safe and early call to cancel school for both students and staff on Tuesday, January 29 throughout the county.

Yesterday, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch beginning at 4AM on Tuesday and lasting through 10PM Tuesday evening.

While precipitation during this time period is a given, it is still unclear if the Heard County area can expect to see much, if any snow accumulations as the majority of the winter weather is expected to stay north of the area particularly north of a line from Franklin to Jonesboro to Gainesville.

Snow accumulations of up to two inches are possible with higher numbers in the higher terrains of the North Georgia mountains.

Travel could be impacted late Tuesday depending on temperatures and the exact timing of the precipitation.

Governor Brian Kemp also made the call to shut down state government offices Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to start out in the high 40’s early Tuesday morning but are expected to dip down into the low to mid 30’s by later afternoon before dipping down into the low 20’s overnight — likely reaching the lowest temperature of the season thus far.

Heard County’s home senior night basketball games scheduled for tomorrow have been postponed until Wednesday at Heard High.
