Heard High launches inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame

(Franklin, GA) — For nearly a century, students have been participating in high school athletics in Heard County.

Soon, the most elite and noteworthy of these athletes as well as other important contributors to local sports history will be honored in a more permanent way.

Beginning in the fall of 2017, the best of the best will be enshrined in the new ‘Heard County Athletics Hall of Fame.’

“It’s been something we’ve talked about for a long time, and it was decided now was the time to move forward,” says Heard County High School Athletic Director Shane Lasseter. “We’ve had many outstanding individuals who have contributed to our athletic programs through the years and we felt now was the time to begin recognizing those past accomplishments.”

The Hall of Fame will be open to student athletes, coaches, and community/school contributors from each scholastic sport. The Hall will be accepting nominations from the other high schools that existed throughout the county prior to the consolidation into the one upper school that exists today.

Lasseter says the process has already started with an initial five person committee being named. Those on the committee have long ties to Heard County Athletics with knowledge across multiple decades.

The inaugural class will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony before the Braves regular season football opener versus South Atlanta at Staples Stadium on Friday, August 18, 2017.

The Hall of Fame committee itself will not be making any nominations as that task will be left up to the local community itself. Athletes will be eligible for induction five years after graduating from HHS meaning that the inaugural class is open to athletes graduating in 2012 or prior.

The athletes must have attended Heard County High Schools for a minimum of two year and be a graduate (or honorary graduate due to circumstances such as being deceased).

Athletes are to be nominated and are eligible based on their high school accomplishments but may enhance their chances based on accomplishments achieved after graduation.

People and groups who nominate athletes for the Hall of Fame are encouraged to cite as many verifiable sources as possible where available (i.e. yearbooks, newspaper clippings, school records, all-region and all-state awards, etc.) The committee will take into consideration that these sources may be more difficult to supply for older nominees.

Criteria for a coach’s induction into the Hall of Fame are that the person coached at Heard County for a minimum of three years. Coaches become eligible for the Hall immediately upon their retirement or five years after leaving employment at Heard County. Coaches that have served the community for longer than 10 years become immediately eligible.

For coach’s inductions, the committee will consider positive contributions to the athletics program as well as championships, winning percentage, awards, years of service, influence in players’ lives, and playoff appearances.

The criteria for a community/school contributor will also be a positive contribution to the overall athletic program. Candidates must have made outstanding contributions or offered extraordinary services to the student athletes and the betterment and growth of the programs. Community/school candidates need not be graduates of Heard County to attain eligibility for the Hall.

Nominations for the 2017 Inaugural Hall of Fame Class are currently being accepted through May 1, 2017. Nomination forms are available at Heard County High School or you may download and print a form at the Heard County High School website.

Once the nomination process is completed, the Hall of Fame committee will begin deliberations to determine the initial group of inductees. The inaugural class of inductees into the Heard County Athletics Hall of Fame will be announced later this year.

Inductees names will be displayed permanently on a specially designated wall behind the home stands at Staples Stadium.
